 DEPARTMENT OF TB AND CHEST

           The Pulmonology department of Government Dharmapuri Medical College  was started in 2008 , involved in the management of various respiratory diseases  like Tuberculosis, BronchialAsthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases, Bronchogenic Carcinoma, ILD,etc.
 
  1. UG training in clinical respiratory medicine
  2. Clinical Research- Operational Research in “ New Sputum Smear Positive Pulmonary TB Detected by LED Microscope in Peripheral DMC in Dharmapuri district”
  3. CME ,Workshops:
    • RNTCP Sensitization program for Medical Officers in  April 2010
    • CME on RNTCP for UG students in 2011 and 2012
    • CME on DOTS, PMDT, HIV –TB  in  Septmber 2012. 
                               
Clinical services

Out patient service

The Out Patient Department (OPD) works six days a week between 8.00am to 12.00pm. Number of patients attending Chest OPD  are 90-100 per day . Patients from various specialties are referred for expert opinion and management.

Average OP Census  per year    :    Male- 18532,   Female -12470

In Patient Service

Total bed available in chest ward is 40 (both Male and Female).

Average IP  Census  per year :    Male- 2629,Female – 2136
 
Chest ward is well ventilated and is fully equipped to manage patients who are critically ill. It has Central Oxygen Supply and Nebulisers. Procedures like Pleural fluid Aspiration, Pleural Biopsy, Inter Costal Tube Insertion and Fine Needle Aspiration are done in the chest ward. Very critically ill patients are managed at the Intensive Respiratory Care Unit.

Facilities available in the department

I. Pulmonary function testing laboratory (PFT)

II. Flexible fibreoptic bronchoscopy (FOB)

FOB done for both outpatients and inpatients in the Bronchoscopy room which is fully equipped with bronchoscope with brush and punch biopsy facility.

III. Rehabilitaition

This aims at improving quality of life in COPD/ bronchial asthma patients. These patients are taught proper technique of using inhalers and breathing exercise. Patients are educated about the hazards of smoking and other tobacco use and are given medical advice regarding stopage of using tobacco.

V. TB Cell

TB CELL functioning  in our outpatient  department implements RNTCP and distributes Anti TB Drugs (DOTS). At present 65 patients are receiving drugs regularly from our centre.
