Department Of Ophthalmology
             The Department of Ophthalmology  was started  in Govt Head Quarters Hospital  in Dharmapuri in the year 1977. It was managed by an Assistant Surgeon with Ophthalmology qualification and three Para Ophthalmic qualified persons. The surgeries were performed once in the week in General Theatre.
           The post of Senior Civil Surgeon was created in the year 1998.   A 32 bedded Ophthalmic Block comprising a Theatre, 2 General wards, 2 Special wards and investigation rooms were constructed  by the DBCS with World Bank Fund in the year 1998. YAG laser treatment was commenced from the year 2005. The Department got recognised for the maximum performance at State Level during the year 2007 – 2008.
The Govt Head Quarters Hospital, Dharmapuri was upgraded into Medical College hospital in the year 2008 .
High End Microscopes(Topcon & Takagi) have replaced the older ones in the year 2009.
To enhance the peripheral Cataract Surgical care weekly surgeries were started in the year 2010  in Pappireddipatty Government Hospital about 40kms away.
Oculopalstic surgeries and squint surgeries were started from 2011.
Phaco Emulsification with foldable IOL , the most advanced type of cataract surgery was started in the year 2012.


Glaucoma surgeries and CMCHIS surgeries started taking place from 2012.
Permission to initiate an Eye Bank under Human Organs Transplant Act (HOTA) was applied and inspection completed.  HOTA licence for eye bank was approved in Feb'2013. Final accreditation procedures are being processed.


Introductory Batch of MBBS students have started attending classes from 2009.
The first batch came out with flying  colours in the university  exams. Out of 59 students, 11 got university honours and 22 got distinctions. Every batch of students are coming out with good academics.Out of 309 students appeared for University exams , 41 students passed out with University honours and 63 distinctions with 100% pass .
