DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

The Department of Microbiology was started in the year 2008 when Govt Dharmapuri  Medical College was established. This department has got two wings diagnostic laboratory and student microbiology laboratory.

Diagnostic Microbiology laboratory:

In this modern era of infectious diseases, the support of well equipped diagnostic laboratory is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment.  The main aim of our diagnostic laboratory is to provide good clinical microbiological services to the community in the fields of Bacteriology, Parasitology, Mycology,Virology, Serology and Immunology.

Services offered:

1.Diagnostic  Bacteriology:            -   Microscopic detection by
                                                     staining  techniques  - Culture and
                                                     sensitivity of various specimens like
                                                     blood,pus,urine,sputum and swabs etc.

2. Diagnostic Virology:                   -  Modern diagnostic facilities like ELISA
                                                      are available for detection of
                                                  Dengue, Chikungunya and HIV.

                                                   opportunistic infections like Cryptosporidium and
                                                     Isospora in HIV patients

4.Diagnostic   Mycobacteriology:  -   Microscopic detection of acid fast bacilli for
                                                            diagnosis of pulmonary and extrapulmonary
                                                             tuberculosis

6.Diagnostic  Mycology:                 -  Microscopic detection and fungal culture

7. Miscellaneous:                             -  Screening sterility of operation theatres of all
                                                             nearby primary health centres

Students Laboratory

The department caters to almost 100 students every year.
Amenities available for the students:

  1. Well equipped student practical laboratory to learn basic microbiological skills
  2.  Qualified faculty to enrich their knowledge with modern audio visual aids
  3. Organised museum and well stocked department library for the students to quench their thirst of knowledge
These amenities guide the students to enable good patient care and prevention and early detection of infectious diseases in the community and also in basic research activities
