DEPARTMENT OF FORENSIC MEDICINE|
The Department of forensic medicine was started in the year 2008 when Govt Dharmapuri Medical College was established. This Department carries out medico-legal work, as well as student academic activities.
Medico-Legal works done in our department are postmortem examinations, Sexual offence case examination, Issuing age certificate, Bone case examination, Expert opinion, Neck tissue examination and collection of specimen samples for grouping and typing.
POST MORTEM EXAMINATION:
Post mortem examination of Medico legal cases includes murder, dismembered bodies, road traffic accidents, train traffic accidents, suspicious death, natural cause, burns, custodial death, poisoning, hanging, fall from height, suffocation deaths, electrocution, drowning, dowry death, snake bites, decomposed bodies, exhumation, firearm injury death, anesthetic and operative deaths were done in the Department of Forensic Medicine.
SEXUAL OFFENCE CASE EXAMINATION:
Examination of the accused with regards to potency, capability of performing sexual intercourse, evidence of sexual act, collection of semen and blood samples for grouping, typing and DNA profiling are done in the Department of Forensic Medicine.
Expert opinions of various difficult cases encountered by the investigating officers and legal authorities are given in the Department of Forensic Medicine.
Age estimation of sexual offence case victim, accused and juveniles involved in crime activities are done based on the findings of physical, dental and radiological examination in the Department of Forensic Medicine.
SKELETAL REMAINS EXAMINATION:
Expert examination of skeletal remains of unknown cases with regards to establishment of identity, stature, cause of death, time since death are done in the Department of Forensic Medicine.
HYOID BONEAND SOFT TISSUE EXAMINATION
Gross examination of hyoid bone and soft tissue-neck examination for the cases of strangulation, hanging and suspicious death are done in the Department of Forensic Medicine.
COLLECTION OF BLOOD SAMPLES:
Blood samples from mother, child and alleged father are collected in FTA card under due precaution for DNA profiling to establish paternity of the child.
Theory and Practical classes are taken for the under graduate students.
Demonstration of postmortem examination to the students, interpretation of postmortem findings and toxicological reports and reporting of opinion as to the cause of death are being done in the Department of Forensic Medicine.
Well equipped mortuary with gallery for the students for viewing post mortem examination, cold storage facility for storing 24 bodies, viscera packing room, lobby for the investigating officers, free mortuary van to deliver dead bodies to various parts of the state, demonstration rooms, students lab, museum, department library, sexual offence case examination room, ice line refrigerator and desktop computer.
